We can be friendly by:

Disciplining without anger or violence;

Helping our child to develop a plan to avoid the problem next time;

Staying calm; being deliberate in our tone of voice, choice of words, timing and body language;

Avoiding power-struggles by using ‘fighting words’.

By learning to make her bed your daughter will save her brain

It’s true. Dr Robert Wilson, author of a groundbreaking study at Rush University, Chicago, says conscientious people have less chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease, and conscientiousness can start with parents teaching their children how to make their beds. This is just another good reason for parents to put in place healthy structures and discipline in their home.

Although you may not be thinking this far into your daughter’s future, Dr Wilson suggests that hard-working, goal-oriented and dependable people have a lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease. He defines conscientiousness as, ‘I keep my belongings clean, I pace myself to get things done on time, I have a clear set of goals, I work towards them in an orderly fashion.’ In an interview in Newsweek he suggests that for this reason parents should encourage their children to do their homework promptly, and make their beds, reinforcing the value of teamwork and responsibility.
